DOVER - Class 3A No. 7 North Montgomery traveled to Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Western Boone Friday night wanting to get back on the winning track after last week's disappointing loss to conference foe Lebanon.

The Chargers' started fast with a tidal wave of momentum to defeat the Stars 41-14.

North Montgomery coach Charley German saw his squad jump all over the Stars by taking a 41-0 lead into halftime.

German said he addressed the team before the game about the fact the Chargers had four starting linemen not dressed due to injury.

"We challenged the kids before the game," German said. "We told them we are banged up and hurting but we are not defeated. We responded extremely well."

With North Montgomery's victory and Southmont's win over conference rival Lebanon, the Chargers moved into a four-way tie for the conference lead.

The Chargers, Stars (5-1), Mounties and Tigers are all tied with 3-1 conference records with three games remaining.

North Montgomery (5-1) scored the first 41 points of the game behind the arm of junior quarterback Clayton Dale. Dale ended the first half completing seven of eight passes for 207 yards and five touchdowns.

Dale, who finished 10-of-11 for 246 yards, credited his teammates and the North Montgomery coaches for his success.

"Coach German has us prepared for this game," Dale said. "The offensive line was great tonight and my receivers ran good routes. We had our backs against the wall coming into this game and we played excellent football."

After a first-quarter 11-yard run and a Dale to sophomore Clay Birdsong 26-yard pass which resulted in two scores, senior Ricky Langford took over in the second quarter.

Langford was on the receiving in of touchdown passes of 28 and 52 yards. He also had an interception in the quarter.

The three-year starter said he was most proud of the defense rebounding after last week's loss.

"Our defense came to play tonight," Langford said. "This was a big win for us since Western Boone was undefeated."

Making his first career start, Birdsong led the Chargers on the ground by rushing 15 times for 70 yards. He also caught two passes for 37 yards.

"Birdsong, in his first varsity start, had a big game for us," German said. "He ran hard and had a great catch and run on his touchdown reception."

North Montgomery will entertain conference rival Danville next week.
