Even though his team trailed #15 Elizabeth Seton by seven points after the first quarter and despite only scoring five points in the quarter, Holy Cross coach Russell Davis did not panic.

The Tartans then proceeded to outscore the Roadrunners 24-8 over the next two quarters and held on for a 51-42 victory.

“We said just hang in there,” Davis said. “They had a lot of energy to start the game off. We thought that energy would dissipate a little bit so we just kept after them.”

Holy Cross went on a 7-0 run to open the second quarter which erased Elizabeth Seton’s lead and they took a one-point-lead into halftime which would have been more since Lea Henry’s last-second heave from half court bounced in off the backboard but was waved off.

“We just had to settle down,” Davis said. “We tried to make some adjustments at halftime. The girls listened and I thought they did an excellent job executing what we talked about at halftime.”

The Roadrunners (16-4) were frustrated by Holy Cross’s half court press which forced a number of turnovers and led to a lot of easy buckets for the Tartans (13-7).

Tyonna Williams led Holy Cross with 17 points including 14 points in the second half. Henry, Lauren Chase and Natasha Thames each chipped in eight points.”

“The first half my nerves were running wild so I had to calm myself down before the second half,” Williams said.

Elizabeth Seton lost despite getting 26 points from Tyaunna Marshall.

“It was very, very big,” Williams said about the win. “I really wanted this game bad. Our team wanted this game bad.”
