Dean Albany's Youse-Maryland Orioles, who at 17-5 are tied for first place with the
Bethesda Big Train in the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League,
hosted an exhibition game on Thursday at the 6th Street Field in
Brooklyn against the Maryland Orioles under 16 team which plays in the
Baltimore Metro League Junior Division. The Orioles are 18-4 on the
season, a half-game out of first in their league behind the Maryland
Hillcats.
Basically, it was the high school stars against college players, and Albany's
squad was coming off an impressive win over the Rockville Express on
Wednesday, when Kevin Brady and Tyler Hibbs were outstanding on the
mound.
The Maryland O's Jake Theiss (North County) and Kodi Beckwith (Towson
Catholic), however, were just as impressive against the college stars on
Thursday, limiting a powerful line-up to three runs in six innings of
work.
Theiss, who started, held Youse's Orioles to one run in three innings,
and Beckwith gave up just two runs over the next three. Eventually, experience won out, as the college
stars erupted for six run in the sixth frame to claim a 7-1
win.
"My fastball was my most effective pitch," said Beckwith, who caught
for Jesse Thomas' Towson Catholic Varsity squad in the spring. "It was
a great experience." Beckwith generally plays the outfield
for the Maryland O's, leaving the tough pitching assignments to Chris
Peltz (Cardinal Gibbons).
Beckwith drove in the only run of the day for his team, with a single.
"I was hoping to pitch today," said Theiss. "Facing that line-up is a challenge.".
It was a good day for the Maryland O's to showcase their talent, and the younger players made a good showing.
