This past Thursday night in a rain soaked, hard fought game, The Lexington Catholic Middle School Knights 8th Grade Team defeated a tough Woodford County Tigers team by a final of 30-14 at the Woodford County Park, just outside of Versailles, Kentucky.

The Tigers won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball to start the game, but that win was short lived as LC's #16, Mike Lynch, interrupted Woodford County's opening drive with a nice tip-to-himself interception near the red zone. LC QB Kyle Bolin (#4) then led the Knights on a long drive which culminated in a half-yard touchdown run by #15 James Maddox. The two point conversion was run in on a quarterback keeper by Bolin, which put Catholic up 8-0 in the first quarter.

As LC lined up for the ensuing kickoff, Coach Hank Whitman spotted a weakness in the Woodford County kickoff return team, and initiated a quick onside kick. The Knights recovered the ball on that kickoff, and promptly drove to the end zone to take a 16-0 lead (after another two point conversion). Highlights of the drive include nice running by Maddox, and pinpoint accuracy on Bolin's passes to work down the field.

Catholic won by a final of 30-14, but a highlight of the short season so far has to be the LC Defense. With Woodford County down by a score of 24-14 and within a yard  or two of the endzone for six more points, Coach Mitchell's defense stepped it up a notch and shut down the Tiger offense. LC put and end to the threat once and for all when James Maddox intercepted a WC pass in the end zone and was off to the races. Nobody caught the speedy Mr. Maddox (though his brother on the sideline gave a valiant celebratory effort), and he returned his interception for a touchdown. Catholic failed to convert the points after, and that gave us the final 16 point margin.

Next, LC travels to Oldham County on Saturday, August 16th.

Our thoughts and prayers to go out to two injured players from this game. LC's Jack Whitman left with a knee injury in the second quarter, and the starting quarterback for Woodford County (forgive me for not knowing his name) was taken to a local hospital after a hard hit as well. Get well soon, gentlemen.
