But that was not
to be, as Notre Dame Prep, coming off its huge 3-2 win at Bryn Mawr last week,
carried that momentum into its match versus Mount de Sales, played at Mount St.
Joe??s, and came away with a 4-1 win.
The end result:
Bryn Mawr has now been champion or co-champion in four of the past five years,
with only St. Paul??s School for Girls title in 2004 keeping them from the
winner??s circle. BMS won the title in 2006, shared it with Roland Park Country in
2005, and won it in 2003. Blazer Coach
Lynn Taylor said the NDP/MDS contest ??was a very close match.?
The two singles matches finished
quickly, with #1 going to Mount de Sales, as Cara Facchina defeated Frances
Hutton (6-4, 6-0) and # 2 going to NDP, as Kasey Harvey bested Maggie Andrews
(6-4, 6-2).
According to Taylor, ??My #1 doubles team won 6-4, 6-4 over a
team they had lost to in straight sets in our first meeting. So the match
came down to the # 2 and #3 doubles,
both my teams having not lost a match this season. I was surprised when I
checked on my # 2 doubles team (Erin Laschinger and Kerry Heitmiller) and
found they had lost the first set and were down 3-0 in the second, but, they
fought back to take the second set and went on to win 6-2 in the third.? By the time
they had settled down, my #3 team (Brooke Jordan & Stephanie Caronna) had
lost the second set after taking the first, forcing their match into a third
set. They played into the dark, not wanting to return to finish the
match. All the teams fought hard to the last point making the wins so
special,? Taylor added.
Caronna and
Jordan had already gone the darkness route last week, playing into the dark on
Thursday before the match was halted, having to return on Friday to conclude.
They did not want a repeat of that scenario ?? except for the win. Ironically, both Brendler an Taylor, along with two players from BMS and NDP were scheduled to appear on the DigitalSports weekly sports show on Monday evening. Taylor and her Blazer representatives were unable to appear, because their match lasted until nearly seven o'clock. Brendler and the Bryn Mawr girls were interviewed, not knowing at the time if they were champs or co-champs. It was not until after the show that Brendler learned, via cell phone, of the outcome of the NDP/MDS match. Obviously, an outright championship would be preferable, but half a title is better than none at all.
