For the St. Louis Crusaders, it was a week that ended with their heads held high. For the Maryknoll Spartans, it was a week that left them scratching theirs.
The ninth ranked Crusaders used a balanced scoring attack, frustrating the eighth ranked Spartans, 58-44, at McCabe Gym.
With the win, St. Louis improved to 6-5 in the ILH, while Maryknoll dropped to 4-7. The Crusaders won all three of their games that they played this week, while the Spartans dropped all of theirs.
Micah McClinton led the Crusaders with 12 points, with Dean Viena and Jamison Miller each adding 9 points off the bench. Richard Herring led the way for the Spartans with 14 points, with Tyler Terai, Garrick Chock, Micah Kalepa, and Ross Lum scoring 5 points each.
Despite the busy week, both teams came out very energetic. Michael Tuiloma scored 5 points in the first quarter giving the Crusaders an early lead. The Spartans, however, started out the second quarter with a 6-0 run, taking a brief 14-13 lead. It took St. Louis over three minutes to score their first points of the quarter, but that basket, a 3- pointer by Viena, got them the lead back. The Spartans, who managed just one field goal in the quarter, kept the game close by sinking nine free throws, and trailed by just two at the half, 21-19.
St. Louis started the second half with a 5-0 run and seized control, out- scoring the Spartans in the quarter 16-9. McClinton, as well as Cole Shidaki each scored 4 points , with Corey Lau adding a 3- pointer. Miller then took over for the Crusaders in the 4th quarter, scoring 7 of his 9 points, including three from the charity stripe. Maryknoll made a late comeback with three 3- pointers, and Herring scoring 9 points, but by then, the Crusaders already had the game in hand.
