Cassidy lifts Punahou off the bench

Henry Cassiday came off the bench to score 11 points and spark Punahou to a
46-44 victory over Kamehameha in a ILH Boys Varsity Division One Basketball
Game at the Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama Kekuhaupio Gym.

Manti Te'o and Kameron Steinhoff each scored 11 points apiece to provide
Punahou with a chance to play for an ILH Championship Game.

The Buffanblu improved to 9-2 and will play Maryknoll tonight to complete the
ILH regular season. Kamehameha dropped to 8-4 and will have to win three
games in a row to earn a state tournament berth.

If Punahou beats Maryknoll today, it will force a one-game playoff with
Iolani Friday night at the NBC Arena. Iolani defeated Saint Louis 55-51 at
McCabe Gym to finish the ILH regular season at 10-2 and clinched at least a
state tournament berth.

Trailing 14-6 in the first quarter, Kamehameha found its patience in the
offense and clawed all the way back into a 22-21 halftime lead.

Punahou would use a 9-0 run to take 36-32 lead at the end of three quarters.

Leading 46-42 entering the final minute of regulation, Punahou failed to
extend its lead from the free throw line.

Auwae DeRego converted two free throws for the Warriors to make it 46-44 with
56 seconds left.

Pressured by the Kamehameha defense, Punahou turned the ball over on its next
possession.

The Warriors final possession came up short of tying or winning the game, unable to convert two field goal attempts against a clutch
defensive effort from Punahou – both inside the key and from long range
behind the arc.
