The Mckinley’s Girls Basketball Team continued their impressive season in the OIA, capping it with the White Championship after defeating Kailua in overtime, 44-41. The Lady Tigers take their 14-1 record into t he Division II State Tournament next week along with a first round bye that comes with being one of the top seeds.
Head Coach Abel Werner, an assistant with the Boys team previously and in his first season with the Girls, managed to keep his team on the right track as Kailua led at halftime and held that lead until the final minute of regulation. Kylie Sato stole the ball with seconds left, penetrated, then got the basket and the foul. Her ensuing free throw would tie the game up and send it into O.T where the Lady Tigers were able to take the lead and hold on.
Tatiana Dinson led the Lady Tigers with 16 points and Sato added 13.
For the Lady Surfriders, they will have to play in the first round of the State Tournament starting next Tuesday. Zsalei Kamaka had 11 points to lead Kailua. Ka’u Kohatsu tossed in 8 and Tia Navarro added 6 points.
