Freshman Taylor Tutrone, Gilman's #1 squash player, won the decisive match in a 4-3 semifinal victory over Episcopal (VA), as the Greyhoudns won the Mid-Atlantic Squash Championships for the first time since 2002.
Squash has just become a varsity sport in the MIAA this winter, but Gilman has fielded a program for many years, which partially explains their dominance so far this season. That dominance expanded outside the MIAA last weekend, as coach Boo Smith's club rolled to the championship at the Mid-Atlantic Squash Championships, held at Episcopal School in Virginia.
The Greyhounds, who are 7-0 in the MIAA, went 3-0 in the event to capture the title for the first time since 2002.
In the first round, Gilman routed St. Andrews 7-0. Episcopal (VA) provided a strong challenge in the semifinal round, but the Greyhounds pulled out a 4-3 victory. They then romped over Shady Side, 7-0, in the final.
The match with home-standing Episcopal came down to a battle of top seeds.
Freshman Taylor Tutrone stepped up big for the Greyhound's defeating Epsicopal senior John Richey to carry the Greyhounds into the finals.
"Taylor is an exceptional player with great skills and poise for a freshman," said Smith. "He kept his composure and stuck to his game plan. That win allowed us to advance to the finals."
Conor McGee, Daviod Hoffman, and Brendan Simmons also had wins against Episcopal.
