Beth Tfiloh moved within one game of completing a perfect season in the MIAA C Conference and winning the league championship, as it knocked off visiting St. John's Catholic Prep, 3-1, yesterday at Sudbrook Magnet School, in the Winner's Bracket Final, of the C Conference Championship Tournament.
Junior ace Aaron Gillette threw another complete game, while striking out six and walking just two. Gillette also made two stellar defensive plays during the game, picking off a runner on first base in the top of the seventh inning and by throwing out a runner on third on a come-backer to the mound. He also got flawless defensive support from the rest of his team, including catcher Ben Rank, who blocked several pitches in the dirt.
The offense was sparked by two RBI by Jeremy Zuckerberg and a run scored on a fielder's choice by Josh Flax.
Evan Giangrande led the Vikings with two hits. Derek Macierowski had a hit and scored the only St John's run. Ryan McDowell pitched six innings and added a double.
The Warriors are now lone remaining unbeaten team in the double-elimination tournament, as they advance to the finals on Tuesday at Joe Cannon Stadium (4:00 pm). They will face the winner of today's scheduled elimination game between St. John's and Saints Peter & Paul, which the Sabres will host in Easton. The Sabres stayed alive in the tournament with a 13-3 win over St. Frances, yesterday.
