THE STAND MAN: When he's not coaching volleyball, wrestling or junior varsity lacrosse at Boys' Latin, Drew Haugh (above) is usually at the Ocean City Beach selling umbrellas, beach chairs and boogie boards. "I've been doing this for 31 yeas," Haugh said. "If I could do this all year round, I probably would."
(See video highlights and interviews below) Boys' Latin's Drew Haugh splits half of his year in Ocean City, both vacationing and working an umbrella and lounge chair stand with with his wife, Laurie, and three sons, Charlie, Pierce and Colton.
Charlie and Pierce are 11th-graders at Boys' Latin, and Colton, a sixth grader there.
A volleyball, wrestling and junior varsity lacrosse coach who also has guided successful football teams at Boys' Latin, Haugh's beach experiences include mostly happy times.
But there was also his near-death experience as a result of being struck by lightening many years ago.
"This is a beach stand where, out here, we have umbrellas, chairs, boogie boards -- all of the stuff that you can use in the Ocean. And I've been doing this for 31 years," said Haugh, standing near his stand at Ocean City's North Division Street.
"We're just out here all summer. It's a great life. I'm in the position where, being a teacher-coach, I have the summers off," Haugh said.
"I can't teach and not do this, and I can't do this and not teach," Haugh said. "But if I could do this all year round, I probably would. But unfortunatley, it's a seasonal business."
