Weekend Invitational Preview - Week 1

The first weekend of the season which used to be packed with meets is now the domain of the Interstate Classic in Clear Spring and the Mount St. Mary's Invitational in Emmitsburg. With the threat of heavy rain from Hurricane Hanna, these races might not have to worry about this weeks 90 degree temperatures. Both meets will be fully covered. Craig Amoss will be at Mt. Interstate Classic

The Interstate Classic should be a good battle on the boys side between Archbishop Spalding, River Hill, Walter Johnson and Urbana. Preston (WV) is always one of the better teams in West Virginia and should bring some good competition to the meet.
Zach Sullivan, JR Spencer and Ryan Topita will try to offset River Hill's Craig Morgan, Sean Kirby, and Kevin Shankar. Urbana will also bring a good top three with Ellery Murdoch, Nick Huang and Jimmy Miller. Walter Johnson will add Sean O'Leary, Roni Teich and Alex Willett to the lead pack. The team winner will come down to who has the strong 4-7 runners. Off of that, River Hill might be hard to beat.

The girls race will come down to River Hill trying to stay ahead of Urbana, Linganore and Hedgesville and Preston of West Virginia. Katie Harman and Anna Demaree of River Hill, Anna Bosse of Walter Johnson, Bridget Nolan of Linganore, Stephanie Bryan of Thomas Johnson and Ari Kasprowicz of Preston should all be in the lead pack.

Mt. St. Mary's Race Information

Course Map

Mt. St. Mary's is a fast and fairly flat course, but on a warm day can be a brutal race for the participants. The meet has a good mix of runners from private, public and Virginia schools, so this should be a good test of strategy for many of the top runners and teams.

Matt Jablonski of Loyola should be one of the favorites in the race, if he isn't playing for the Don's soccer team and he should have plenty of competition from Corey Puffett and Robert Patterson of Dematha. Freshman Dave Ozarowski of Archbishop Curley will find better competition this week and will be hard pressed to repeat his third place finish at the Bear Mountain Invite last weekend in Pennsylvania. Gonzaga will bring a strong team after their win at the Jefferson Invitational and Bill Ledder will be in the lead pack. Quince Orchard, will see where they are after losing most of their squad to graduation last year and will have Wayne Bartholomew in the lead pack. Northwest might be the class of the field returning their entire squad from last year and will have Chris Miller as their representative in the lead pack. South River, Middletown, Red Lion (PA) and Bishop O'Connell (VA) will also field strong teams.

Northwest should also be the leader for the girls with Britt Eckerstrom the favorite for the individual title. South River will give them a run for the team title behind Hillary Lee, Mary Fromme and Miranda Heater. John Carroll will be hard pressed to push for the team title but will have Elizabeth Tauber to lead the team. Good Counsel and Middletown should also field more than competitive teams
