Baltimore has churned out many outstanding high school basketball players who have gone on to professional stardom and one of the biggest names on this list, from the early eighties, was Calvert Hall star Duane Ferrell.
Recently, Ferrell rejoined the NBA's Atlanta Hawks, with whom he started his NBA career and played six of his 11 professional seasons, as the team's Player Relations and Programs Manager.
Ferrell was a rising star on the 1981-1982 Calvert Hall squad which went 34-0 and won the mythical high school national championship. Eventually, he would go on to an outstanding college career in the Atlantic Coast Conference with Georgia Tech, where he scored 1,818 points (still ninth on the school's all-time list). He was not drafted upon graduation, but signed with the Hawks as a free agent.
He remained with the Hawks from 1988 through 1994, before finishing his career with the Indiana Pacers (1994-97) and Golden State Warriors (1997-99). His best pro season came in 1991-92, when he averaged 12.7 points and 3.2 rebounds in 66 games with the Hawks. He played in 583 career games.
“It’s a dream situation for me to return to the organization where I saw my most success as a pro,” Ferrell said. “I played here for six years, and have been proud to call Atlanta my home since 1984. I want to do anything I can to help the players, coaches and franchise to reach their ultimate success, and I think this group is headed in that direction.”
Ferrell served in a similar position with the Washington Wizards from 2001 to 2004.
