The DigitalSports Baltimore Metro Athletes of the Week feature is published every Monday.

If you know any male or female high school athletes within the Baltimore Metro area that you feel should receive the weekly recognition, please email any of the writers from our content team with statistics from that week and why you feel the athlete should be chosen.

The finalists will be based on the consensus opinions of our Baltimore staff, in consultation with area coaches and other sport specific experts. All public and private schools located in our Baltimore coverage area, which includes Baltimore City, along with Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Cecil, Harford and Howard counties, will be considered.

Male Athlete of the Week
David Stinebaugh, Perry Hall football

For the second consecutive week our Male Athlete of the Week award will reside in Perry Hall, as Stinebaugh, the Gators' speedy two-way star, had a huge game on both sides of the ball to lead Perry Hall to a 34-0 vicory over Governor Thomas Johnson High School in a 4A North Region Semifinal playoff game, Friday night.

Stinebaugh, who will play as college football at the University of Maryland starting next fall, hauled in touchdown passes of 30 and eight yards in the victory and he also had a pair of interceptions and recovered a fumple on defense.

Stinebaugh has been Mr. Everything for the Gators over the last three years and his teammates are accustomed to watching him come up with a big play exactly when it is needed the most.  In 2008, he now has nine touchdown catches, seven interceptions and five fumble recoveries.  He also handles the team's punting.

This week Stinebaugh will attempt to extend his high school career a bit further, as leads the Gators into Linganore of Frederick County where they will challenge the undefeated Lancers for 4A North Region Championship and a spot in the State Semifinals.

Others considered: Arundel football player Billy Cosh, St. Mary's football player Mark McNeil, Edmondson football player Devon Carpenter.

Female Athlete of the Week
Shelby Greene, Broadneck volleyball

Every team needs someone to do the dirty work -- the little things that don't bring great glory, but set the stage for team success.  In volleyball that job falls to the setter and nobody did it better last week than Broadneck's Shelby Greene, who help lead the Bruins to their second consecutive 4A Maryland State Championship.

In two matches at the University of Maryland's Ritchie Colesium, Greene recorded 70 assists as Broadneck swept Eleanor Roosevelt, in the semifinals, and topped Thomas Johnson, 3-1, in the 4A final, to defend the title they won last fall.  Against Roosevelt, she set the table for 36 of her team's 41 kills.

Greene, just a junior, now will set her sights on helping the Bruins accomplish a rare third consecutive title.

Others considered: Liberty volleyball player Kelly Viera, Centennial volleyball Jackie Hawks.
