ABOUT THE MIAA

miaa.jpg

The Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association is an independent organization comprised of 28 private high schools located in and around the Baltimore Metro area. Founded in 1994, MIAA schools have a combined enrollment in excess of 17,000 students. More than 60% of these students participate in at least one of 15 MIAA sanctioned Sports. In addition, more than 97% of all graduates from MIAA schools go on to college, including many who enroll in some of our nation's most prestigious universities.

The MIAA was formed after the Baltimore City Schools withdrew from the Historic Maryland Scholastic Association (MSA) in order to join the other public schools in the state which are under the umbrella of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA).

A committee headed by then Archbishop Curley High School Principal Father Robert Twele drew up a new constitution and by-laws for the remaining private and parochial schools. The MIAA played its first official schedule in the Fall of 1995.

With the addition of St. John's Prospect Hall (Frederick) and The Key School (Annapolis) in the fall of 2003, MIAA institutions are located in seven Maryland counties and Baltimore City.
