The Douglas Freeman Rebels came back late in the game to beat the Hanover Hawks 2-1 in overtime on Thursday night.

Ann Gordon Mickel scored with ten minutes left in regulation and in extra time to win the game for the Rebels.

The Hawks jumped on the score board first when junior forward Nikki Glisson dribbled across the top on the Rebels box and blasted a shot into the net putting Hanover up 1-0.

Hanover continued to attack the rest of the half and had several chances on goal.

Hanovers best opportunity to go up another goal came when Glisson sent a nice pass to junior midfielder Rachel Moore who put her shot just high of Freeman’s goal.

In the second half, Hanover had several more chances to put the game out of reach but were unable to convert.

Glisson made some excellent runs up top for Hanover, one that resulted in a break away that she put past the goalkeeper but was denied by the post.

Late in the second half, it was Freeman who started to apply some pressure of their own.

Junior midfielder Simone Jimenez and sophomore forward Kimmy Higgins had some great chances to even the game but were denied by Hanover senior goalkeeper Maggie Tillar.

With just ten minutes left in regulation, Freeman’s Mickel was able to get onto the end of a cross just inside of Hanover’s box and place the ball into the back of the net to tie the game 1-1 and force overtime.

It would be Mickel again in overtime to crush Hanover’s hopes of winning as she once again found the back of the net winning the game for the Rebels.

“It feels pretty nice,” Mickel said. “I am still a little bit shocked but it feels nice.”

The D.S. Freeman Rebels improved their record to 2-1 while the Hanover Hawks fell to 1-2.
