Matt Gwaltney - Baseball POW - April 1

Mataoca's Matt Gwaltney had an impressive week at the plate and for that he is our player of the week.

Published: 04/02/2008

How did Matoaca's Matt Gwaltney pass the time when he was injured over the winter? By playing Rock Band on his Xbox 360 of course. Just don't ask him to play the drums, he is more of a guitar man.

Matt Gwaltney, Matoaca Warriors

Height: 5-8 1/2         Age: 18

Position: DH/Pitcher/3B    Year: Senior

Performance: Gwaltney went 11 for 16 with two home runs, 11 RBI and five runs as Matoaca went 4-0 in the Spring Break Blast tournament. He hit the two homers and went 4 for 4 with five RBI and three runs in the third game of the tourney against Lee-Davis. The team's success has propelled them to 5-1 and No. 4 in the DigitalSports Top 10.

On going 4-0 in two days: "In that tournament we were playing it felt really good. Basically, we are a pretty young team and we all played our best. We kept hitting the ball."

On being in the zone: "I was seeing the ball pretty well. The ball had some pop coming off the bat."

Best trait: "Composure. I don't ever get too mad. That is a trait with all of us, we have a pretty good composed team."

Something to improve on: "My speed. I'm coming back from an injury and over the winter I couldn't run. I need to get faster."

On coming back from an injury: "Back in March of last year I broke my foot [sliding into second base]. I played legion over the summer, then in September in gym I cut the wrong way and broke the same three bones. It was rough because I thought it was healed and it took me until December before I started walking again. It is probably the worst thing that has ever happened to me physically. Before that I had never broken a bone."

Favorite music: "Classic rock and rock. Everything in rock from the 60's till now. I Like Metallica, Tool and Dave Mathews Band."

Something you wouldn’t know: "I play video games. Rock Band is my favorite right now."

Favorite food: Steak and cheese sub

Funniest teammate: "Patrick Peterson (catcher), we like to joke around."

If you could invite any three people to dinner: "Cal Ripken Jr., Bobby Cox and Pete Rose."

Favorite class: "If I had a favorite class it would be anatomy."

Favorite movie: I Am Legend

Future: "Go to college and hopefully play baseball. I've Looked at Longwood, Hampden-Sydney and VCU. I've always wanted to go to JMU."
