A Cosby player will be taking home the Dominion District singles title this season, that much is certain.
Who will be crowned the champion, though, is still undecided.
Top-seeded
Tyler Carey and
Dominic Bullano both won their semifinals singles matches to set up an all Cosby final on Thursday at James River.
Carey, a freshman, defeated Midlothian's
Tyler Colbert 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 on a hot and windy Wednesday afternoon.
"I thought I played pretty well for the first and third sets," Carey said. "I just stopped moving my feet in the second set and he took advantage of the short balls I was giving him. But overall I thought I played pretty well."
Bullano got by another Trojan, second-seeded
Matt Seeds. The Titans' sophomore led 5-2 in the first set before hanging on to win it 6-4 and then rallied to take the second set 6-4 after trailing 4-3.
Carey and Bullano are good friends and are also doubles partners.
"It will be fun, we know each other pretty well," Bullano said.
The duo are also the top seed in the doubles tournament and advanced to the semifinals with a 10-1 victory over Monacan's
Brandon Green and
Braden Cosner.
They will meet Seeds and
Garrett Kellner who beat Manchester's
Logan Hardy and
Justin Moore 10-2. The semifinal matches were suspended due to darkness.
"Win just like singles hopefully," said Carey of his doubles expectations. "We are a strong doubles team, we're undefeated this year."
On the other side of the draw the second-seeded team of
Zack Cerny and
Josh Bortell of James River topped Monacan's
Ian Crowley and
Sean McCabe 10-2.
Cerny and Bortell move on to face another Cosby pair,
Marshall Hatfield and
Nick Malatesta, after they outlasted Colbert and
Chris James 10-8.
