Hanover, ranked sixth in the
DigitalSports Top 10, defeated eighth-ranked
Henrico 3-0 in Thursday night's home game.
The Hawks were led by pitcher
Jake Mayers who pitched a complete game allowing only four hits and no runs scored as Hanover claimed the Capital District's regular-season crown.
"We knew tonight was the big one and we were prepared," Mayers said. "We came out and played what I thought was our best game this year. My fast ball and curve felt good for me tonight."
Hanover jumped onto the score board in the bottom of the first inning against Henrico pitcher
Seth-Culter Voltz.
Left fielder
Aaron Adkins scored when he stole third base and then took home when Warriors catcher
Michael Mansfield threw the ball away trying to catch him stealing third.
The Hawks were able to bat in another run in the bottom of the second inning, when catcher
Eric Mayers hit a grounder that caused an error to bring in shortstop
Beau Flinchum grabbing the 2-0 lead.
The game remained that way untill the bottom of the sixth inning.
Laine Denton scored an insurance run by taking home on a wild pitch to put the Hawks up 3-0.
Henrico had one last up at-bat in the top of the seventh but were denied by the outstanding pitching of Mayers.
Mayers was able to strike out the first two Henrico batters and force first baseman
Alvin Hence to groundout winning the game for the Hawks.
