CHANTILLY – Deep Run made advancing to the state championship look easy.
The Wildcats hit on all cylinders as they defeated Kecoughtan 6-0 in the state Group AAA semifinals on Friday at Westfield High School.
Carl Weber had two goals and Brian Ownby had a goal and three assists to lead Deep Run (21-2-1).
“Brian is something special,” Deep Run coach Steve Chapman said. “He works hard to get the ball in the final third of the field and to create scoring opportunities. He knows he doesn’t have to score every time and is a very unselfish player.”
Weber scored the match’s first goal with 19 minutes left in the first half on a header off of an Ownby cross.
Less than two minutes later Ricky Siewers scored thanks to another Ownby assist.
“We came out strong and put away our chances and after that we just took it away,” Ownby said.
Weber started the scoring again in the second half.
He found the back of the net off of a corner kick just under seven minutes into the half putting Deep Run ahead 3-0.
Ownby, the Central Region player of the year, earned his third assist 42 seconds later as he set up Bryan Wharton for a goal.
In the 56th minute Ownby got into the scoring act as he showed off his ridiculous dribbling skills before putting in the Wildcats’ fifth goal.
With ten minutes left Bobby McDonnell ended the rout with a goal.
“It was 6-0 but we could have had eight or nine goals,” Chapman said. “It was good Deep Run soccer. The field really helped us, it was the best field we have played on all year.”
