Highland Springs Hokies

Highland Springs’ Derrick Hopkins, the extremely talented defensive tackle, is going to Virginia Tech.

The news is more of a coronation than an announcement. Most top Springer football players turn into top Hokies.

Victor “Macho” Harris – congrats Philly Eagle, brother Antoine Hopkins, Cris Hill, Noland Burchette, Jim Davis, to name several in the past eight years or so.

Forgive me if I forgot one.

Hanover softball factory

Similar to Highland Springs in football, the Hanover Hawks are turning out college softball players.

Another is set to continue their career, Amanda Woolard, the outfielder with tremendous range. Call her No Gapper, because you won’t get a yellow softball in left- or right-center with her in centerfield.

She officially signs May 15 with Louisburg College, I will try to get some video up of that event. Congrats Amanda, one of the best athletes in the area, hands down.

Patton, more ink

Becky Patton is ridiculous. Goodness!

The Collegiate junior scored two more goals in Thursday’s LIS tourney clinching win over Trinity Episcopal.

She just got private-school player of the week after scoring eight goals in two weeks and three games against great competition.

Patton isn’t getting a lot of interest from colleges yet, so…wake up out there! She’s an offensive machine.

Winter Warriors

Okay, OK, oookkk! Did I say it enough ways?

Forgive me, I haven’t finished our basketball all-stars yet.

Here’s a promise: This weekend it will be up, boys and girls, guaranteed.

I’m working my buns off, and will continue to by getting this up. (Forgive me Nica, that’s my wife by the way. Hey babe!)

And for being patient, I’ll tell you a surprise member of the boys team…

……

Travis McKie! Did I get you? HAHA!

Seriously though, I had to go up to 12 members on each team from 10 last year. Just too many good players, and I’m still leaving some out. I’m sad about it.

Moving on.

Football at U.Va.

My ’05 Mustang just jumped for joy! The University of Virginia has the next two state football championships, Division 5 and 6.

Those who know me well know I love the Hokies, but that drive was ****** to see Dinwiddie’s historic run this past December.

I’d much rather go about an hour to Charlottesville than three and a triple jump to Blacksburg.

Read U.Va. athletic director Craig Littlepage right quick: “There are numerous options state wide where the Virginia High School League could stage its football championships. We’re pleased that the University
of Virginia and Charlottesville are once again the choice to partner with the VHSL.

“Our central location, quality facilities, and excellent staffing mean the games will get our best efforts, making the contests memorable for participants and fans alike.”

Until next time, it’s your favorite reporter, signing off…
