Can the 4,000-yard man, Will White, pass Trinity Episcopal to more wins this season?

White, a senior three-year starting quarterback, hopes the question is irrelevant by the end of the 2009 season.

At the end of 2008, a 3-7 campaign for the Titans, coach Eric Gobble went to the running game more, which kept defenses guessing.

“Hopefully we can get the running game going and bring a few more defenders in the box,” White said.

Gobble said that teams got smart and started dropping as many as eight defenders in pass coverage to guard against White and his band of receivers.

It worked because the Titans were not potent enough against the run.

Gobble is hoping things will change this season, but some green parts are going to have to do it.

White has all underclassmen with him in the backfield, none with varsity experience running with the pigskin.

“We’ve got to be able to control the ball game through the run,” Gobble said. “We’ve got to be more than the Will White Show.”

White’s supporting actors include senior receivers Nick Almond and Andrew Sarlo, and promising junior tight end Evan McGill.

A usually good defense is there for support as well, but it won’t matter if White can’t get help from his ball carriers and offensive line, led by Jack Miller.

ALL ABOUT TRINITY EPISCOPAL

Key players: Will White, Sr., QB; Kyle Marron, DB, Sr.; Jack Miller, OT, Sr.; Andrew Sarlo, WR, Sr.; Evan McGill, TE/DE, 6-4, 227, Jr.; Nick Almond, WR, Sr., 6-3

Key losses: Josh Shaw, OT; Alex Link, WR

Fast fact: Trinity will face St. Christopher’s and Collegiate, as the Titans didn’t face either Richmond private school last season.

Big game: vs. St. Christopher’s, Sept. 4, 4:30 p.m. Trinity wants a rivalry to be born in football with other Richmond squads. It gets a chance in the first game of the season.

Outlook: Run, run, run. If the young running backs and offensive line can get a consistent ground attack going, White can lead Trinity to more wins than 2008.
