Here’s a question.

What two Dominion District teams have a consecutive playoff streak of two or more?

L.C. Bird and … Monacan. The Chiefs have made two straight Central Region, Division 5 playoff appearances.

Yes, Division 5 is the weaker division, but Monacan has been playing good football under Danny Parsons.

This year, he has 7 starters back, three offensively and four on defense.

One taking a spot on both sides of the ball is Logan Staib (Sti-be).

He will pull the unusual double of quarterback and middle linebacker.

“This year they’re finally going to let me go both ways,” Staib said. “Last year … defense is my love, but I had to step in at quarterback. It’s tough because you’ve got to know the defensive assignments as well as the offensive. But I’m up for the challenge.”

Staib hopes new starters like running back Doug Brown are as ready as he is.

J.C. Wiggins leaves a big hole in the backfield, and Garett Patterson leaves the same void at free safety.

They both were big keys to Monacan’s playoffs berths, and will need to step forward if the Chiefs are to get another.

“We need some young guys to step up. And we have plenty,” Staib said. “We have a good junior class coming in.”

Defensively, Travis Luck is a junior at OLB, and Parsons loves his junior defensive end tandem of Joseph White and Will Womack.

Offensively, Brinnan Bradshaw, another junior, is a promising tight end prospect, at 6-3, 230 pounds with good speed.

Monacan’s not at the reload level yet, but this group could go a long way to achieving that level.

ALL ABOUT MONACAN

Key players: Logan Staib, MLB/QB, Sr.; Doug Brown, RB, Sr.; Robert Redfern, OL, Sr.; Kevin Walker, FS/WR, Sr.; David Jordan, OT; Jovan Moody, CB; Travis Luck, OLB, Jr.

Key losses: J.C. Wiggins, RB; Garett Patterson, FS (Duke)

Fast fact: The Chiefs have made two straight playoff apperances, but hadn’t made the playoffs in seven years before. Both playoff losses have been to Hanover.

Big game: vs. Hanover, Oct. 23, 7:30 p.m. Win could be big boost in Division 5 race.

Outlook: There are a lot of new parts that will try to lift Monacan. If the newcomers can produce, Monacan will make it three straight playoff apperances.
