When scrimmaging for the first time against a team as talented as Varina, it can be tough to get anything positive out of the outing.

But Huguenot showed coach Ron Gundry enough to have optimisim in 2009.

“I think we’re talented,” Gundry said. “We’re real happy with the program.”

Leading the way is Trevor Williams, a wide receiver this time last year. He’s moved to QB and provides and run threat, but also has a good, accurate arm.

“He’s going to be good,” Gundry said.

He saw time against a strong Varina defense, but Gundry didn’t give many different offensive looks, only wanting to give his guys some pad time against different faces than their own.

Other keys for the Falcons will be Quinton Watson at running back, Kent Banks returning on the offensive line and receiver Sadaris Fitzgerald.

Gundry has lost several players from last season’s 2-8 squad for various reasons, but believes it will be addition by subtraction.

“We’re going to be OK. I’m real happy with all of the kids. We made it more conscious that the real reason is to go to school, not just play football. I won’t play them unless they pass their classes.

“I think we’re on the up and up at Huguenot.”

ALL ABOUT HUGUENOT

Key loss: Jonathan Crawley, OT/DT (Winston-Salem State); Darius Bowling

Outlook: Coach Gundry is happy with his student-athletes. Huguenot will have a better product on the field this season.
