The Deep Run Wildcats took control of the Colonial District girls soccer race with a 2-1 win over the visiting Mills Godwin Eagles Monday night.

Deep Run held a slight possession advantage as the first half was played in a driving rain with a steady, stiff wind in Godwin’s face.

The Eagles, however, had the better shots early. Becca Haislip unloaded from out wide right with 35:00, but substitute keeper Anna Moyer made a solid save. Moyer played in place of regular Emma Newins, who was out with a slight injury.

About 10 minutes later Moyer again stuffed a Godwin attempt on Ellen Upton‘s long shot from straight away. The Wildcats best shot at a goal came with about 2:30 left in the half as a strong cross resulted in a header that went wide as the first half ended in a scoreless tie.

As the two teams took the field to start the second half, lightening appeared and delayed the match for 30 minutes as both the rain and wind disappeared.

After the delay the Wildcats assumed control, putting Godwin in danger several times. With 36:30 to go a misplayed back pass by Godwin resulted in a Deep Run corner that ricocheted through several players before the Wildcats Laura Dobbs knocked it in for the game’s first goal.

The Wildcats struck again seven minutes later on another corner as Brittany Entz knocked in the corner with her shoulder for a 2-0 lead.

At the 9:00 mark Godwin closed the gap with a corner of its own as Upton headed in Alayna Vaughan‘s kick.

The Eagles pressed forward in the last nine minutes and with 1:50 to go Sarah Bellotti fought off a Wildcat defender and drove the ball to the end line and angled a pass back across the middle. Godwin’s Jessica Atar fired a shot from the right that sailed over the goal. That was the last bit of danger for the Wildcats as the game ended.

Deep Run returns to action Wednesday at home against Dominion district foe Monacan. Godwin heads to Hanover of the Capital District for a match Tuesday night.
