Calvert Hall snapped a two-game losing streak at St.Paul's on Saturday, defeating the Crusaders 10-0 behind Mike Dillon's brilliant
five-inning one-hitter. The Cardinals improved to 13-3, but they remain a game behind Archbishop Spalding (14-2), an11-8 winner over
Loyola on Friday.
Dillon gave up a first inning two-out triple to Jack Carey, but that was the only hit the Crusaders would get. The senior right-hander got his seventh win of the year against one loss. He had pin-point control, fanning nineand walking none.
The loss dropped St. Paul's (9-6) into a fourth place tie with Loyola. The Crusaders and Dons will square off on Monday at Blakefield.
Coach Lou Eckerl's defending MIAA A Conference champions sent ten men to the plate in the top of the first, scoring six times. Sophomore second baseman Patrick Fitzgerald, whose on base percentage is up to .558, started the game with a single. After Kevin Lingerman singled, Pat Blair reached on an error and clean-up hitter Matt Fairbank smashed a 3-2 pitch to deep right center, clearing the bases with a booming three-run triple. Greg Bryant singled Fairbank home, and it was 4-0.
Evan Cain ripped a single to left and Joe Robak moved both runners up with a sac-bunt. Justin Anderson then doubled off the left-field fence and the Hall had a 6-0 lead. They would get one in the fourth, when Bryant doubled home Fitzgerald, who started the inning with
a two-bagger of his own, and three more in the fifth.
Every starter had at least one hit, and five different Cards had two hits each. Fairbank and Anderson each drove in three runs on the day.
