Calvert Hall moved back into a first-place tie with Archbishop Spalding in the MIAA A Conference baseball standings with a thrilling, 2-1, come-from-behind victory over an unpredictable Cardinal Gibbons team, on Monday in Towson. The Cardinal win, coupled with a Spalding loss to Achbishop Curley, means the race for first place in the conference will go down to the wire this week.

Kevin Lingerman, who always seems to come through in the clutch, threw a five-hitter for coach Lou Eckerl and pitched out of a jam in the top of the seventh when the Crusaders loaded the bases with no outs, and the score tied at 1-1.

The unflappable right-hander, reached back to get an infield out on a pop to third, and then he struck out the last two Crusader hitters to end the threat.  He fanned eleven Gibbons hitters, and walked one.

Joe Robak led off the bottom of the seventh with a ground rule double to left for Calvert Hall and it would eventually load the bases with an infield errror and an intentional walk.  Justin Anderson then singled to left, and Robak raced home with the winning run.

It was a heart-breaking defeat for Gibbons right-hander Chris Peltz, who was very effective on the hill for coach Lee Schwartzenberg.

"I hit my spots most of the time," said the young pitcher.  "We'll just have to come back strong on Wednesday."

Peltz was outstanding. The sophomore dueled the experienced Lingerman pitch for pitch, until the Cards grabbed the lead and the win in the home half of the seventh.

"I was looking for a fastball, and I got it," said Anderson. "I just wanted to get the bat on the ball.  He (Peltz) did a great job for them."

The Hall has won two staright after losing twice last week.  Mike Dillon threw a one-hitter against St. Paul's on Saturday, and Lingerman did not allow an earned run on Tuesday.  The only Gibbons run scored on a passed ball in the fourth nning, when the Crusaders grabbed a 1-0 lead.

Gibbons shortstop Robbie Harris had a double and a triple, and scored the only run of the day for the Crusaders.
