During
halftime of the Anacostia vs. Woodson girls varsity basketball game on Friday, February 15th at Anacostia SHS, the Lady Indians' Coach Frank Briscoe was honored
for winning his 500th game against McKinley Tech in early February. Briscoe quickly turned the attention away from himself to recognize Anacostia’s
senior girls varsity basketball players and their parents. The honorees included #3 Guard Nikia Waldron,
#4 Guard Robin Crawford, #5 Guard Bianca White, #11 Guard Glenisha Thomas, #20
Guard Miyosha Jefferson and #21 Forward Donia Naylor.
In addition to the honor bestowed upon Coach Frank Briscoe and the senior players, during the ceremony, the only junior-year player from Anacostia honored was #12
Junior Tyra Martin. Anacostia SHS' Athletic Director, Eileen Covington said, "We would like to recognize Tyra for her outstanding leadership, service, and athleticism." Lamisha Mills, Lady Indians' team
statistician, was also honored for her hard work and dedication to Anacostia's girls varsity basketball team, and "for her contribution to the team's operations," Covington said.
Covington acknowledged Coach Briscoe for
his generous commitment and dedication to Anacostia SHS Athletics, and for achieving his 500th
win. Eileen Covington said, “We want to acknowledge Coach Briscoe and his
family for this great accomplishment.” Mrs. Goldberg, Principal of Anacostia SHS, presented a plaque to Coach
Briscoe. Coach
Briscoe said, “Having won my 500th game has been quite an
accomplishment. It took a lot of dedication and a lot of hard work by a lot of
young ladies who stuck with me from the beginning to the end. I’m very proud of
them. I believe that there’s only one other coach who has more victories than
that and that’s Bob Headen from HD Woodson. He’s a legend. I’m looking forward
to next year and I hope to have another successful year."
Bob
Headen, former HD Woodson Athletic Director and Coach of varsity football, girls basketball and softball, acknowledged Coach Briscoe during the event for his contribution to DCPS Athletics.
Headen said, “I’ve always said that Coach Briscoe is the hardest working coach
with DCPS. He not only coaches track, but basketball, as well. And to achieve
his 500th win, that’s the greatest victory right there.” Headen is often referred to as a coaching "legend" within the DCIAA, and has coached over 15 professional athletes at HD Woodson, including Byron Leftwich of the Atlanta Falcons.
