Ballou Marching Band to Perform at Tournament of Roses Parade
Ballou Knights' Marching Band to Perform at 120th Tournament of Roses in Pasadena, CA, January 1, 2009
Published: 03/25/2008
"Ballou's Number One," said Band Director Darrell Watson of
the nationally-ranked Ballou Knights' Marching Band, which recently became the
first high school band chosen to perform in the Rose Bowl's Tournament of
Roses Parade in Pasadena, California on January 1st, 2009. As an alumnus of
Ballou SHS and the Director of the Ballou Marching Band, Watson has received a great deal of recognition in the last year, and he has accepted the honors with a gracious attitude.
The energy and enthusiasm of the Band is infectious. If you've ever seen them
perform, you can't but help but smile and become energized. They have
the power to instill excitement into the crowd. Recently, the Ballou SHS Marching Band had the opportunity to perform at numerous national
competitions, including the "Battle of the Bands," in California. The Band and Director have gained significant notoriety in recent months. Garden Thieves
Pictures recently created a documentary film about the Ballou Marching Band, and is working on a film about Band Director Darrell Watson, as well. The documentary ignited a flow of publicity and prompted First Lady Laura
Bush to invite the band to the White House for a meeting and screening of the film.
Mr. Watson said, "We've been on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. She also gave us
[the Band] $25,000 and another $75,000 for the school. We're very happy about that, and we
just want to continue to do great things in the community and at Ballou SHS." In addition, Watson was also recently chosen
as an ABC News "Person of the Year."
DigitalSports DC congratulates the Ballou SHS Marching Band, Band Director Darrell Watson, and Ballou alumni volunteers for their outstanding accomplishments.
