On Wednesday, April 30,
2008, H.D. Woodson Lady Warriors’ Senior Guard, Tyche' Mozie, accepted a full
basketball scholarship to attend the University of Maryland’s Eastern Shore
Campus. “It feels great,” said Mozie. “I feel like my hard work has
finally paid off. I look forward to playing at the next level, winning our
championship, and going on to play in the NCAA Tournament,” said Mozie.
Mozie played an
integral role in leading the H.D. Woodson Lady Warriors to the 2008 DCIAA &
City Title Championship. "Tyche' is a hard working, dedicated, and committed
person who has a great sense of morals and ethics. She is a very intelligent
student, and will be a major asset to Coach Batchelor's program at the UMD,
ES," said H.D. Woodson Lady Warrior’s Head Basketball Coach, Frank Oliver,
Jr.
Oliver expressed his confidence in
Mozie’s strength as a championship player, and he has no doubt that she will
stand out at the University of Maryland. Oliver said, "She has the
ability to play both guard spots and is deadly from behind the three-point
line. You don't want to leave her open." Mozie’s success is a testament to
what hard work and dedication can yield. Oliver speaks highly of Mozie’s
commitment and focus.
Mozie
said, “Most athletes like to go to established programs. I want to be part of
turning around a program. I want to make a difference and show everyone that
you don’t have to go to a top name school to be recognized. You just have to
work hard. No matter what you go through you can always make it if you put your
heart and your mind to it. While at H.D. I learned through my coaches that
success really isn’t a destination; it’s a journey. And I’m going to school,
not just to play basketball. I’m going to get my degree and a solid education.” Mozie has been a major player and
contributor to the H.D. Woodson Warrior family over the last two years.
During last year's Nike Tournament
of Champions, Tyche' demonstrated her power on the court, scoring an astounding
11 consecutive game points to close the deficit against perennial powerhouse
Christ the King (NY). " That was a turning point in our season. We ended
up winning that game in overtime. It gave us major confidence that carried us
throughout the season, and Tyche showed she belonged at the highest level of
girls high school basketball, the Tournament of Champions," said Oliver.
Mozie
plans to study business management at the University of Maryland. She begins
college in August. When asked what she would miss
the most about being a student-athlete at H.D. Woodson, Mozie said, “I’m going
to miss everything about my team. The journey I went through prepared me for life. Winning and losing helped prepare me for the future. I’m going to
miss my teammates, coaches and the parents, but I plan to be back to visit often.”
