Senior Tommy Fenyak threw a complete game three-hitter Tuesday night to lead No. 7 Westfield to a home, 7-1 victory over top-ranked Oakton.
It took no time for the Bulldogs’ offense to get started as freshman lead-off hitter Aaron Hoover and senior second baseman Richie Brown started the bottom half of the first inning with back-to-back doubles.
Already up 1-0, senior first baseman and Ole Miss-bound Matt Snyder stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run home run over the scoreboard in right/center field to give Westfield a 3-0 edge after one inning. Snyder’s twin brother, Mike Snyder, plays first base for the Bulldogs and will be joining his brother this fall at Mississippi.
Those first three runs proved to be all the leeway Fenyak needed. He did much of the rest of the work himself, getting two Cougars to hit into double-plays in the first and fourth innings and retiring the final nine Oakton batters in order.
“It feels great,” Fenyak said. “The team played well and backed me up. We scored some runs. It was a good game.”
Brown homered in the fifth inning to cap a perfect, 4-for-4 night at the plate and finished the game a mere a double shy of the hitting for the cycle.
Westfield has won three of its past four games and will host Forest Park at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Oakton, whose lone run came in third inning when senior catcher Keith Werman was hit by a pitch and later scored on a fielders’ choice, will host Centreville at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
