When Annandale senior attack Dylan Volk scored the game-winning goal in sudden death overtime to secure a 7-6 victory over Lake Braddock and the Atoms' second ever Patriot District tournament title, he had undoubtedly just netted the biggest goal in his high school career.

Only, he'd like to see a videotape, please. Because Volk said he only remembers taking the shot -- not it going in.

"I shot it, and the next thing I knew I was being trampled," Volk said. "[It felt] like a million pounds on my body. Everyone weighs a lot."

Volk's overtime goal -- and the subsequent pile-on by his teammates that ensued -- wasn't the only dramatic moment in the game.

Before that, in regulation,
Atoms' senior attack Matt Johnson seemed caught in an untenable position. With just :29 seconds remaining and Lake Braddock holding a tenuous, one-goal lead, Johnson started to slip. But with Lake Braddock senior goal keeper Will Peabody and senior defenseman Joey Belcher rapidly approaching, Johnson somehow managed to flip the ball over Peabody and score the game-tying goal, sending the Annandale fans into a frenzy.

"It's really overwhelming," said Annandale senior goalie Kevin McCracken, who played well in goal all night. "We've been waiting for this all season."

McCracken was locked in a duel all game with Lake Braddock senior attack Woody Kidd, who quarterbacks the Bruins' offense. In the first half McCracken got the better of Kidd, holding him scoreless despite his firing several blistering shots. In the second half, however, Kidd turned up the heat, scoring three goals, including one with 2:41 remaining in the fourth quarter that gave Lake Braddock its only lead of the night.

"This game could have gone either way," Lake Braddock Coach Steve Price said. "All I can tell my team is that they played a great game tonight."

Added Annandale Coach Bill Maglisceau: "McCracken came up big for us. Most of their goals came when we had mental breakdowns."

Annandale will enter the upcoming Northern Region tournament as a No. 1 seed and will host Thomas Jefferson, the No. 4 seed from the Liberty District, on Tuesday. The Atoms have not faced the Colonials this season.

"We have to stay composed and do what we've been doing all season," McCracken said.

No. 2 seed Lake Braddock, meanwhile, will also open at home against Liberty District No. 3 seed Madison.
