Chantilly's Colella Corrals Stone Bridge in Baseball Regional Opener

Ashburn (May 25, 2009) – For the first time since moving to AAA four years ago neither the Stone Bridge softball or baseball teams advanced to regional quarterfinal action on Memorial Day after both teams fell by 3-2 margins Friday evening.

And both teams were stopped by strong pitchers with Robinson’s Marcy Bowdren taming the Bulldog softball team and Chantilly senior John Colella throwing a 1-hitter to beat the Bulldog baseball team. (Stone Bridge officially had Colella’s performance as a 2-hiiter while Chantilly scored it a 1-hitter. Either way, score it as a brilliant outing for the Charger).

Colella gave up just one earned run in the victory, a solo home run to Johnny Bladel and Chantilly used a first inning, two-run home run by senior Brian King and a two-out RBI by No. 9 hitter sophomore Jamie Danehower in the sixth inning to advance to the quarterfinals.

Bladel, who took the loss on the mound, tried to help his own cause by reaching base two other times and advancing to scoring position but his teammates couldn’t come up with the timely hits off Colella.

Stone Bridge’s other run came on a two-out error in the fifth inning.

Patrick Thompson flirted with a dramatic walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning but his shot to right field with one out and one on was about 10 feet short of the fence. Colella then struck out the next two hitters to end the game.
