2008 Football: Top 10 Games — No. 6

No. 6 Game of 2008
Washington-Lee (3-3) and Wakefield (2-4) entered this Week 7 match-up as the No. 7 and No. 8 seeds, respectively, in the Division 5 playoff picture. As if being in four weeks from the start of the postseason were not enough, General senior running back Charlie Fuller grew up within the Warriors’ school boundaries. And he factored greatly in the result.

Wakefield struck three times in the second quarter, en route to a 20-0 lead, and appeared well on its way to only its second win in the annual series since 2001. But, after a 50-yard touchdown run and touchdown pass by Fuller, Washington-Lee junior kicker Chris Almquist capped a 21-point surge by the home team with a 44-yard, final-minute blast after an onside kick recovery.

The Warriors, though, got well within senior kicker Rodrick Likonko‘s range and he lined up for a 27-yard, would-be-game-winning field goal on the final play of the night.

The result left both teams thinking they had won.

The kick sailed directly over the left upright. The officials ruled it no good and Washington-Lee was propelled to its first playoff berth since 1975.

Wakefield finished less than one PowerPoint out of the postseason, a difference that surely would have been reconciled if Likonko’s field goal was successful.

This year, the Generals and Warriors meet on Oct. 30.
