The Cardinal Gibbons baseball team was just trying to re-group and play good baseball when the #1 ranked Calvert Hall Cardinals
invaded Babe Ruth Field on Monday afternoon. After all, the Crusaders had
lost to Mount St. Joseph and John Carroll by respective
scores of 8-1 and 8-4, last week, and the Cardinals, undefeated locally since 2006, were coming off of a
big 12-5 win over #2 Archbishop Spalding on the road, last Wednesday.
But things would change dramatically on a brisk, partly cloudy afternoon
for coach Lee Schwarzenberg's and his charges.
With the score tied 3-3 and two away in the bottom of the fourth, Gibbons
would break loose and score eight times with two outs. Sophomore Dom
Fratantuono keyed the spree with a bases loaded double. The spunky
leftf-fielder had three hits and three RBI's to lead the Crusader
attack.
Centerfielder Blake Thompson had three hits and Robbie Harris, Andrew Parker and Bryan Smith all had two base knocks in a 17 hit Crusader onslaught.
"This has to be the biggest win in the last 20-25 years for Gibbons," said Coach Lee Schwarzenberg "To be able to beat a team as good as Calvert Hall is really special. Just a few weeks ago, they were the #1 team in the country."
Calvert Hall (13-4 overall) had its MIAA A Conference winning streak of 31 snapped and it dropped into second place, a half-game behind Archbishop Spalding, a 6-2 winner over previously unbeaten Archbishop Curley. Spalding beat the Friars, 6-2, yesterday, behind the strong right arm of Jason Patten. The Cavaliers improved to 7-1 in the league, while Calvert Hall and Curley each fell to 6-1. Gibbons, which is among a tightly bunched four team pack, all battling for three playoff spots, improved to 3-4 in the A Confernece and 11-5 overall.
"We dug ourselves a hole, and just couldn't dig out." said Calvert Hall's Lou Eckerl, ever gracious in defeat. After winning every game they played last season, and having just won nine straight after a difficult California trip, it was the first time that Eckerl's squad has lost to a Baltimore team since 2006.
