Cardinal Gibbons senior Warren Felton, a 6-foot-2, 280-pound two-way lineman, will attend Youngstown State in Ohio on a full football scholarship.
(See video interviews below)
Raised by his single mother, Carol, Warren Felton scored 1,470 on his SAT and said he has been told by the Youngstown coaching staff that he is expected to start right away.
"He started off playing basketball with a couple of kids that he met in the neighborhood. But after a couple of years of that, his whole body started to change. His shoulders got bigger, his feet got bigger," said Carol Felton, referring to a transformation that began when her son was "about 13 or 14 years old."
"Then, he came home one day and, shortly after starting in high school, said that he wanted to go to a combine. I didnt' have any idea what that was about. But he went to one, and he did very well," said Carol Felton, an Elkridge resident. "From then on, we went to others -- West Virginia, Syracuse, Virginia Tech. We traveled all of last summer to different colleges. He got a lot of interest, but no one talked about money at that time."
Felton continued to impress through his sophomore and junior seasons at Cardinal Gibbons, and the colleges -- impressed with his agility -- continued to track him.
"I had someone tape his high school games and make over 60-, or 70-some DVDs and we sent them to a bunch of different colleges. Eventually, out of the blue, we got a call from Youngstown State," said Carol Felton.
"That was a surprise call. They offered him a full scholarship," Carol Felton said. "I'm very proud of my son. It's been hard, at times, but he's found his focus and stayed on track and got that scholarship. He's looking forward to playing football for Youngstown."
DigitalSports recently caught up with Felton, a resident of Eldersburg in Howard County.
