Prairie sophomore Slayd Schimmel was a triple winner against Carroll
Thursday, winning the 100 (11.8), 200 (24.0) and high jump (5 feet, 2
inches) as the CP boys’ team defeated Carroll Thursday, 86-44. Schimmel
was also part of the victorious 400 relay team with Cory Barnett, Jon
Beale and Jacob Batts (47.0).
“What a great night for Slayd,”
Prairie coach Heath Johnson said. “He showed some leadership out there
tonight and, most of all, confidence throughout all of his events.
Let’s remember this young man is just a sophomore.”
Miles
Biery won the 1,600 (4:59) and 800 (2:10.3) along with anchoring the
winning 3,200 relay team (Josh Stevens, Jamie Dority, Adam Schrock,
9:11.1) and winning with the 1,600 rely team (Stevens, Beale, Barnett).
Other winners were Barnett (55.4) in the 400, Beale in the pole vault
(9-0), Nate Pritchard in the discus (89-2) and Adam Schrock in the
3,200 (11:24.7). Johnson said he was pleased with the performance of
Dority, who ran the 3,200 relay, 1,600, 800 and and 3,200.
“Jamie
was the hardest working man in track last night,” Johnson said. “He
usually doesn’t run the 800 for us, but I wasn’t sure how much I’d be
able to get out of Stevens and Barnett tonight (due to injuries), so I
thought I’d see if he was open to the idea.
“We may not have depth on this team, but we have real talent and a lot of heart.”
The
girls’ team narrowly lost, 66-65. Courtney Hodgen won three events to
pace the Gophers, winning the 100 (13.9), 200 (28.6) and long jump
(13-8) along with running the lead leg of the winning 400 relay team
(Shannon Pedigo, Taylor Perkins, Kelly Mathews, 54.6).
“Hodgen
is focused this year,” Johnson said. “She’s mentioned it several times.
She understands that it’s her senior season and she’s attacking each
event. I hope that attitude is contagious and spreads throughout this
team.”
Raelyn Rawlings won the shot put (29-8) and discus (96-2). Johnson said an injury to April Farley hurt the Gophers Thursday.
“We
obviously missed April’s presence in the high jump and shot put, but
it’s one of those things you can’t control. Other girls on the team
need to step up and many of them did. I knew it would be a close meet.
We need a bit more consistency out of our distance runners.”
