Dulaney senior midfielder Brad Ruzicka had a big hand in the Lions' triumph over Catonsville Tuesday evening in the Baltimore County finals. His goal with 4:37 remaining in regulation broke a 6-6 tie, and scored the Lions' first goal in the opening quarter.

by Derek ToneyTuesday night’s appearance by Catonsville High in the Baltimore County boys’ lacrosse finals was the school’s first in 52 years. But the latest chapter in Baltimore County lacrosse once again had a familiar ending.
Dulaney penned yet another championship, beating the Comets, 9-6, on their home field. The Lions won their seventh title in eight years.
Senior midfielder Cody Lehrer and sophomore attack Kevin Tignall had two goals and an assist for Dulaney (13-2), and Brad Ruzicka scored twice. Catonsville (10-4) received a game-high four goals from sophomore Nikko Gurnsey.
Tied at six, the Lions scored the game’s final three goals to snap Catonsville’s nine-game winning streak. Dulaney coach Jake Reed said he was pleased with his team’s effort.
“I think we finally played a good game,” said Reed. “We’ve been playing a couple of quarters, but not a whole good game. We played hard, we played with heart and we played smart, and that’s a good combination.”
The Lions displayed all three attributes after Catonsville rallied from a two-goal deficit in the final period to pull even, thanks to consecutive goals from Gurnsey. Ruzicka, a senior midfielder, broke the tie with an unassisted goal with 4 minutes, 37 seconds remaining in regulation.
“Our goalie made a good save and I think the ball came up from Kenny [Naylor] or Jay [Mann],” said Ruzicka. “I dodged my man and stuck the shot.”
Sophomore attack Kevin Tignall and senior attack Spencer Martin followed with scores for the Lions, who beat Catonsville earlier in the season. The Comets were more than game for the rematch, but when pushed, Dulaney showed championship resilience.
“We started off kind of slow,” said Ruzicka. “Three of their goals came in the first quarter. When it comes down it, we got to finish and put the ball in the net.”
The Comets led 3-1 in the opening quarter behind goals from Skippy Clary, Gurnsey and Matt Reymann with senior attack Ben Cohee providing a pair of assists. A lazer off of the stick of Lehrer landed in the upper right corner, bringing Dulaney to 3-2 with 6:41 remaining in the second quarter.
The Lions pulled even at three on a goal from Tignall, set up by Lehner. The origins of the score begah when Catonsville sophomore goalie Nick Gallina was hit near midfield while trying to advance the ball.
Jay Mann gave Dulaney the lead for good with an unassisted tally with 3:13 left in the first half. The Lions opened the second half with an unassisted goal from Ben Yancheski, extending the lead to 5-3. Gurnsey’s second goal, with just four seconds left in the third, brought Catonsville to back to within a goal.
Dulaney won the opening faceoff in the fourth quarter, and Yancheski fed Lehrer for his second goal. Reed credited the senior leadership of Lehrer, Yancheski, goalie Alex Williamson, Ruzicka, Mann, Patch Ronald for getting the Lions through.
There could be a third chapter involving the Lions and Catonsville in the Class 4A/3A South Region playoffs next week. Dulaney, seeded third, will host either Parkville or Patterson in the quarterfinals while No. 4 Catonsville has either Patapsco or Woodlawn in the quarterfinals.
“It’s going to be another tough game,” said Reed. “It’s hard to beat a team three times in a season, and we’re going to find out.”
