The Maryland
Orioles under 18 team in the Baltimore Metro League swept a
double-header from the Yankee Rebels under 19 squad on Saturday at the
Community College of Baltimore County at Catonsville, by scores of 11-6
and 8-7. Jeremy Verhoef (Chesapeake-AA) got the win in game one,
holding the Rebels to six hits in six innngs, and he helped his own
cause with two hits and an RBI. Verhoef stayed hot at the plate in
game two, going 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
"We played well today, said the right-hander, who will be a senior at
Chesapeake next fall. "Everyone seemed to get a key hit whenever we
needed it."
Brody Kean (Northeast) started the scoring in the lid-lifter with a
home run to left-center in the top of the second, and he came up big on
the hill in the night-cap. Kean was summoned to the mound in the top
of the sixth after the Rebels loaded the bases with no outs. Mike
Perez (DeMatha) started the inning with a solo homer to deep center
that cut the Oriole lead to 8-6. Kean got Tony Perez (DeMatha) on a
sac-fly to left that plated Scott Allen (Centennial), and then he got
Tyler Schoolden (Long Reach) to ground to second, before he struck out
Chase Smith (Western Tech) to end the threat. Allen homered in game one, and drove in four Rebel runs.
Kean escaped more trouble in the bottom of the seventh, when Perez (hit
by the pitch) and Allen (walk) were on first and second again, with two
down, when he got Kevin Williford (Old Mill) , who came to the plate
looking for his fourth hit of the game, on a fly-out to right-center to
end the game.
Perez and his brother Mike, who both played for DeMatha in the spring,
accounted for five Rebel runs in game two, Mike with a home run and a
single, and Tony with a triple and a sac-fly.
Kevin O'Neil (Southern), had two hits in game two, after hitting a big
three-run homer down the left-field in game one that keyed a five-run
Oriole sixth inning that put the game out of reach.
Sean Bertrand (North County), who homered in the first game, banged two doubles, scored two runs and drove in two in the second game,
picked up the win for the O's. Bertrand came on in the third, in relief
of starter Ryan Staton, who left the game with muscle cramps in his
right leg.
Staton, who was 10-3 on the mound at Cardinal Gibbons with wins over
Calvert Hall and Archbishop Curley in the spring, was going for his sixth Oriole
win without a loss. The big-right hander made a contribution to the
Oriole offense in game one, with two hits and three RBI. Kean had
three hits, and Keith May and Josh Rickman each had two hits in the
opener for the O's. May had two RBI in game two, and Eric Kron and
Spencer Wolfe had two hits each for the O's in the second game.
For the Rebels, Eric Brooks (Lansdowne), Ian Kramer (Western Tech) and
Allen all had two hits in game one; Brooks had two more in game two.
