Long Reach achieved everything it could have hoped for in its softball season opener, on Saturday, as the Lightning received a no-hit effort from pitcher Becky Randel and got a big day from its offense in a 20-2 rout of visiting Fairmont Heights.
Randel was not flawless, as she walked two and hit one batter, but she was dominant, allowing no earned runs.
Robyn Abernathy led the way at the plate, as she collected two hits in three trips, including a home run, scored three runs and drove in three. Abby DeFeo also hit a home run, walked twice and scored four runs scored in her first varsity game.
Long Reach should receive a stronger challenge this afternoon, when it hosts IAAM power Seton Keough.
