INDIANAPOLIS – Martinsville took a 7-0 lead early, gave up 32 straight points to host Mooresville … then rallied with five unanswered touchdowns to post a wacky 40-32 Mid-State Conference victory Sept. 25.

The victorious Class 5A Artesians (5-1 overall, 3-1 in league play) trailed 32-7 after 4A Mooresville’s Aric Bigham (23 carries for 176 yards) tallied his third touchdown on a 37-yard run with eight minutes to play in the third quarter. But sophomore quarterback Hayden recovered from three interceptions to rally Martinsville to the game’s final 33 points.

Northern (18 of 33 for 253 yards and four TDs) struck for three touchdown passes – throws of 36 and 30 yards to Michael Callon (five catches for 114 yards) sandwiching a 14-yard scoring strike to senior Hunter Clephane – as the Artesians roared back within a touchdown at 32-25 after all three conversion attempts failed.

No matter. Martinsville took the lead when Joe Schoolcraft scored on a one-yard run and subsequent two-point conversion run – following a 4th-and-9 conversion from the Mooresville 40, no less – and the Artesians put the nail in the Pioneers’ coffin when junior Devon Hogan recovered a fumble in the end zone.

Zowie! Quite a turnaround for a formerly prominent Martinsville program that hasn’t finished above .500 since 2001. The victory also draws Martinsville into a first-place tie with Mooresville atop the Mid-State standings, a half-game up on 4A No. 11 Plainfield and Whiteland.

Next up for Martinsville is an Oct. 2 home game against Class 4A No. 8 Roncalli (4-2), a 55-10 Week 6 loser at home to 4A top-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral. Mooresville (4-2, 3-1) will travel next Friday to Whiteland (3-3, 2-1), a 35-14 Week 6 winner over Mid-State foe Franklin.
