THE PAPER

GREENCASTLE - Apparently a little rest can make quite the difference for Creasy Clauser.

Southmont's senior 800-meter runner raced her way to another record at Tuesday's Indiana High School Athletic Association South Putnam Girls Track Sectional.

Clauser won the 800 and broke the sectional's longest-standing record, finishing in 2:14.58 - just .02 seconds ahead of the previous-best set in 1981 by Greencastle's Lisa Allen.

Southmont placed sixth in the team standings, finishing with 40 points. Brownsburg (148 1/2 points) won the 14-team meet. Crawfordsville finished 14th with two points.

The top four individuals from each event move on to next week's IHSAA West Lafayette Regional.

Southmont track coach Marvin Walters decided to pull Clauser and the rest of Southmont's 3,200 relay team out of their event before the meet.

Thanks to some fresher legs, all his runners responded and the plan worked like a charm.

Southmont sophomore Kylie Lippencott finished second in the 1,600 in a personal-best 5:15.78. She finished only 1.4 seconds behind Brownsburg sophomore Madelyn Webster.

They also teamed together on the Mounties' third-place 1,600 relay along, with sophomore Shelby Harris and freshman Stephanie Martin. They finished in a season-best 4:13.21.

"Creasy was going after the record," Walters said. "Since we pulled out of 4x800 we thought we'd increase Creasy's chance and Kylie's [chance], plus it'd keep Shelby Harris fresher for the 1,600 relay."

Junior Kyra Burton and sophomore Cassie Parker also advanced in field events.

Burton finished third in the pole vault, tying her school- and county-record at 9-feet, 6-inches.

But Parker was the biggest surprise.

She placed fourth in the shot put with her 33-5½ throw - breaking her previous best mark by more than two feet.

"When we left the shot put, we thought Parker was fifth or sixth and did not know she had moved ahead to qualify," Walters said. "I don't think any of our throwers scored in the county, conference or sectional last year."

Lafayette Jefferson Sectional

North Montgomery sophomore Celia Kauth advanced to regionals, placing second in the high jump (5-0). She was one inch away from the top spot and the only Chargers' athlete to move on.
