If you want quality girls basketball, look no further than the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference. Five of the league’s eight schools have won state titles, with a pair of them (North Central (Indianapolis) and Ben Davis) having done it twice.

This league, which finished with a state-best .818 winning percentage (99-22) against other conferences a year ago, is a meat grinder. An amazing five schools finished in the ICGSA’s Class 4A Top 10 last season: Ben Davis (first), Lawrence North (third), Carmel (fifth), North Central (sixth), and Terre Haute South (ninth).

And the league also produced the 4A state champion, although it was Carmel that got hot at the right time instead of large-school favorite Ben Davis. The Greyhounds reeled off eight straight wins – including a shocking 56-45 regional championship upset of Ben Davis – that culminated with an 84-72 thumping of South Bend Washington in the state finals.

So can the MIC match its fantastic season of a year ago? Let’s find out!

Top teams

Ben Davis

What to say about Ben Davis? The Giants, the sure-fire favorite to win last year’s 4A state title, return all five starters from a team that went 24-2 and shared conference champion honors with North Central. Ranked No. 1 in both the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (atop 4A) and the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (all four classes combined) polls, BD is an even bigger favorite to go all the way this season.

And for good reason. If ever there was a squad to be up to that challenge, it’s this one.

Still, the MIC’s most-tenured coach, Ben Davis’ Stan Benge, said one of his team’s goals will be trying to get better every game.

“The conference should be the toughest in the state,” said Benge, now entering his 24th season on Indy’s westside. “We have everybody back, so we will have a big target on our back.

Four players – 5’7” senior guard Alex Bentley (Penn State), 6’0” junior guard Dorothy “Dee-Dee” Williams (Purdue), 5’10” senior forward DeAirra Goss (Western Michigan), and 5’9” senior reserve forward Emily Huber (Ava Marie) – will head off to play college ball when they’ve hung up their purple jerseys. Bentley, a 5’7” senior guard capable of single-handedly taking over games with her kinetic energy, and Goss, a 5’10” senior forward, were all-conference selections.

All five starters return, so imagine the focus and cohesiveness – especially when the Giants get a chance for revenge at their two conquerors, North Central and Carmel. (BD was playing its fifth game in eight days in a 57-50 loss at the former, and the Giants’ regional loss to eventual state champion Carmel sent shockwaves through the state.)

Starting lineup:

G Sr 5’7” Alex Bentley (15.0 ppg, 2.8 apg, 2.6 spg)
F Sr 5’10” DeAirra Goss (10.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg)
G Jr 6’0’ Dorothy “Dee-Dee” Williams (3.9 apg)
F Jr 5’11” Vivian Holcomb (6.1 rpg, 2.0 spg)
F So 5’10” Bria Goss (10.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.6 apg, 3.1 spg)

Key reserves:

F Jr 5’8” Demetria Nunley
G So 5’4” Janee’ Kimball
C Fr 6’2” Shawnece Teague
G Fr 5’9” Brionna Arnold

Factoids:

Ben Davis will compete in the seven-team Avon Sectional with Brownsburg, Decatur Central, Indianapolis Manual, Indianapolis Tech, Pike, and the host Orioles … the Giants finished No. 1 in final Class 4A coaches’ poll and first overall in the combined IBCA poll a year ago … BD had the state’s fifth-best record at 24-2last season … Ben Davis was the 4A state champion in back-to-back seasons in 2000 and 2001

Carmel

Flash back to Jan. 22. Going into the next-to-last week of the regular season, Carmel had a chance to knock off two No. 1-ranked teams in the state with games against 2A Heritage Christian and 4A Ben Davis. When the first didn’t happen – Carmel would lose 57-50 at home to HC before falling 57-43 at BD – coach Scott Bowen was clearly disappointed when talking to this reporter.

But he got the last laugh. And how.

The Greyhounds eked out victories over their next two opponents (54-51 in overtime over Center Grove in the season finale and 56-51 against highly ranked Hamilton Southeastern in the sectional opener). But Carmel then got a case of the mojos like the school had never seen on the girls hardwood, rolling past its next six opponents by double figures en route to the state title.

That streak included 11-point vengeance against Ben Davis and a 12-point thumping of defending 4A state champ South Bend Washington in the championship game. Guess that grueling last-season schedule paid some dividends, eh?

This year, the ’Hounds begin defense of their crown at No. 3 in the coaches poll and No. 4 in the IBCA all-classes rankings. Carmel will sorely miss the post presence of graduated Danielle Havel, but the 1-2 punch of a pair of college signees should help ease that blow.

All-conference 5’11” senior guard Chrissy Steffen (a Bowling Green commitment) returns, as does 6’0” sophomore swingman Torrie Thornton (already locked up by Purdue). Also back is 6’1” senior guard/forward Lauren McRoberts, and yes she’s related to Josh.

The ’Hounds will look to mix in some of their younger kids with some of their older kids to find a solid rotation by tournament time, Bowen said.

“The MIC, year in and year out, is no doubt the toughest conference in the state,” said Bowen, whose record stood at 75-20 entering his fifth season at Carmel. “Every team possesses their unique style of play, which makes all of the matchups very interesting to watch as the year progresses.

“Obviously, we want to compete every time we get a chance to play someone else. Our Chicago trip in January will be exciting for our kids to go out of state and play against some very good teams from the Chicagoland area. Then, we want to definitely be at our best when the IHSAA tournament rolls around in February.

There some precedent there, after all.

F Jr 6’0” Annie Rubendunst

G Jr 5’11” Shelby Zeller

G Sr 5’3” Maggie Byrne

Factoids:

Carmel defeated South Bend Washington 84-72 for the 4A state title a year ago … Greyhounds will host the six-team Carmel Sectional with Fishers, Hamilton Southeastern, Noblesville, Westfield, and Zionsville … Carmel finished No. 5 in the final Class 4A coaches’ poll and seventh overall in the combined IBCA poll last season … ’Hounds were state runner-up to Huntington North in 1995, three seasons before class sports took effect

Lawrence North

Lawrence North (2-4, 5-2 a year ago) starts this season as one of the state’s elite, ranked at No. 7 in the 4A coaches’ poll and ninth in the combined IBCA poll. Despite four starters returning, however, coach Jodie Whitaker faces two huge hurdles: a departed Felisha Johnson and injured junior Ahlivia Spencer.

“We have experience but are lacking depth, and there’ll be a lack of height in the post,” said Whitaker, 150-113 in her 12th year at LN. “Ben Davis is the favorite to win the conference but, as always, the MIC will be very competitive.

Our first conference game will be versus Ben Davis (a Dec.4 home game), so that will be one that we will look to.”

Odds are the 6-foot Spencer will not be back from a knee injury in time for that one (Whitaker expects her to be available at some point in mid-December). With the mammoth 6’2” Johnson having graduated, that’s a big 1-2 hole.

But the season is long, and there’s plenty of talent to take up the reins. Six-foot senior Daress McClung, an all-MIC selection last year who’s bound for Cincinnati, returns to lead the Wildcats with extremely balanced stat-stuffing averages of 14.5 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Classmate 5’6” guard Erica Beeler (8 ppg, 3 rpg, 4.5 apg, 3 spg) also is back, along with 5’7” senior Natasha Jessup (6 ppg, 4 rpg) and 5’5” junior Consuelo Owens (5 ppg, 3 apg).

And here’s hoping that Terra Majors flourishes her senior year with a return to that ‘do from the early part of last season – the 5’5” guard had the coolest multi-colored hair in the state!

Starting lineup/main rotation:

Sr 6’0” Daress McClung (14.5 ppg, 7 rpg, 3 apg, 3 spg)

Sr 5’6” Erica Beeler (8 ppg, 3 rpg, 4.5 apg, 3 spg)

Lawrence North lost 46-43 to North Central (Indianapolis) in the sectional final a year ago … the Wildcats will compete in the seven-team Indianapolis Arlington Sectional with Indianapolis Broad Ripple, Indianapolis Cathedral, Lawrence Central, North Central (Indianapolis), Warren Central, and the host Golden Knights … LN finished No. 3 in the final Class 4A coaches’ poll last season and fourth overall in the combined IBCA poll

Terre Haute South

Coach Dave Cassell takes over for Alan Maroska at following a season that ended far too abruptly (a 60-52 loss to Martinsville in the sectional championship) for the defending Hall of Fame Classic champion Braves (20-6, 3-4 last year). But the cupboard certainly is not bare at Terre Haute South, which opens the season ranked fifth in the Class 4A coaches’ poll (and 10th overall in the IBCA all-classes-combined rankings).

Terre Haute South returns its three-headed monster of double-figure scorers in seniors Dragana Grbic, Tessa Johnson, and Krista Smith. Grbic, a 6’3” center who has signed with Butler, was the most valuable player a year ago at the aforementioned Hall of Fame tourney and averaged 13.3 points per game. Johnson, a 5’11” forward, averaged a team-high 15.4 points each night out, while the 5’9” Smith contributed 12.5 points a game from her forward position.

“Our main goal is to establish depth during the regular season,” said Cassell, whose Braves got an early start in accomplishing that in Week 1 with 16-, 19-, and 23-point victories in defeating Owen Valley, Terre Haute North, and Fountain Central for the eight-team Clabber Girl Classic title at West Vigo.

The key this season will be remaining competitive against the conference’s other powers. Four of the Braves’ six losses last year came in the league, including double-digit road defeats vs. Ben Davis (80-54), Lawrence North (82-53), and Carmel (69-59).

With all three of those teams coming to Vigo County this year, however, the sky’s the limit. The Braves already have avenged one of their half-dozen defeats from last season, following up the Clabber Girl crown by blasting 4A No. 6 Bloomington South 56-39.

Starting lineup:

Sleepers

Center Grove

A year ago, Center Grove was motoring along with an 8-2 record and a spot among the state’s Top 10-ranked 4A schools. Then the Trojans ran into the meaty MIC portion of the schedule and, lo and behold, dropped six of their next nine contests.

Welcome to life in the MIC (insert sigh here …).

Coach Joe Lentz (246-79 in his 15th year at the school) welcomes back 6’2” junior forward Kirsten Gliesmann, whom Lentz feels will be one of the most outstanding players in the state. The third-year starter, who averaged 9.7 points and 8.9 rebounds per game a year ago, will be joined in the frontcourt by 6’2” senior center Hannah Bedan. Five-foot-nine senior guard Brittney Shaner (9.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.4 apg), meanwhile, will anchor the backcourt.

“We could be very good if our guard play improves,” said Lentz, whose Trojans opened the season at No. 18 in the 4A coaches poll and 20th overall in the IBCA rankings. “The trouble is that in our conference, very good is only average.”

Like the rest of the free world, Lentz expects Ben Davis to win both the MIC and state this year. The Trojans, he said, will be focusing on the Johnson County Tournament, the Franklin Central Holiday Tournament and, of course, the sectional.

Starting lineup:

G Sr 5’9” Brittney Shaner (9.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.4 apg)

G Sr 5’10” Kelli Lippold

C Sr 6’0” Hannah Bedan

F Jr 6’2” Kirsten Gliesmann (9.7 ppg, 8.9 rpg)

G Jr 5’5” Kayla Heldman

Factoids:

Center Grove lost 54-52 in double overtime to Franklin in the sectional final a year ago …the Trojans will compete in the seven-team Southport Sectional with Franklin, Franklin Central, Greenwood, Perry Meridian, Whiteland, and the host Cardinals … Center Grove was state champion in 1996, two years before class sports went into effect

North Central (Indianapolis)

North Central (18-6, 6-1 a year ago) must recover from the loss of six seniors from last year’s team that shared conference champion honors with Ben Davis. That half-dozen includes a pair of college signees in point guard Briana Bass (Tennessee) and fellow backcourt player Kira Carter (Oakland).

The Panthers were the only team in the state to defeat Ben Davis in the regular season a year ago, downing the Giants 57-50 in a mid-season home game. But the Giants had NC’s number on two other occasions, including the regional semifinal where BD applied a 57-38 beatdown. Despite a preseason ranking of No. 11 in the IBCA all-classes poll and No. 22 in the 4A coaches poll, it’s time for semi-rebuilding on Indy’s northside for coach Alan Vickrey (174-84 in his 12th year at the school).

North Central will look to senior forwards 5’9” Kyla Buckley and 5’10” Jalissa Chatlos early on to provide stability for an otherwise young squad. Also working inside will be 6-foot senior forward Arielle Lockett-Griggs and 6-foot sophomore forward Jalen Greene, while 5’7” sophomore guard Portia Ingram figures to run the show.

Starting lineup/main rotation:

F Sr 5’9” Kyla Buckley

G So 5’7” Portia Ingram

Warren Central

Here’s a hint at how deep the MIC is. Warren Central finished 8-13 overall and 0-7 in the conference last year, yet the Warriors still received honorable mention in this year’s preseason IBCA poll. Holy behemoth, Batman!

Coach Mike Brooks takes over for Dave Burton, and he faces a major turnover factor as the new mentor must replace seven seniors and all five starters from that last-place conference squad. Still, Brooks likes his chances.

“As a first-year coach at the high school I attended, my first goal is to bring some excitement back to the program,” Brooks said. “The girls have responded well to my staff and me with a renewed work ethic, and they’ve had both an outstanding offseason and preseason.

“Obviously people are not expecting much from a senior-depleted team. However, I am very optimistic about the Warriors and the 2008-09 campaign.”

The Warriors will be led by a host of different players. Senior guard/forward 5’9” Keona Breun, an aggressive defender and a proven scorer on the offensive end, returns as the second-leading scorer from last year’s team, while juniors Brandi McKinney and Jordan Barton will look to burst onto the scene this season.

The 5’7” McKinney is capable of an offensive explosion at any given moment from her guard spot, while 5’11” forward Barton is a versatile scorer who can produce from the perimeter and down low in the post. Other players to keep an eye on, according to Brooks, include 5’10” senior forward Qaniah Douglas, 5’7” junior guard Breauna Turner, and a pair of sophomores – 5’10” forward Bianca King and 6’1” center Rayven Davis.

Brooks said the Warriors also will showcase three talented freshmen who will contribute heavily to the team’s success. Five-foot-five BreAnn Denny will lead the charge from the point guard position, with 5’7” swingman Kalliste Haskins and 5’6” guard Linzi Moore also seeing significant minutes in the Warriors’ attempt to contend with the other great teams in the conference.

Likely to struggle

Terre Haute North

The Patriots (7-13, 1-6 last year) have won as many as two conference games only once in the past five seasons and, with the bevy of talent in the league this year, will be hard-pressed to surpass that feat this time around.

Coach Mike Allen (49-57 in his sixth year at the helm) will rely on a starting lineup of four juniors plus 6-foot senior center Emily Adams, so the Patriots should be a well-heeled, veteran group this time next year.

Starting lineup:

F Jr 5’7” Danielle Ketner

Conference overview

Two of the league’s eight coaches – Dave Cassell at Terre Haute South and Mike Brooks at Warren Central – are new this year. With the level of talent that annually crops up in a conference that features the state’s four largest schools (Ben Davis 4495, Carmel 4001, Warren Central 3896, and North Central 3373, not to mention eighth-largest Lawrence North at 2853), their inaugural seasons are practically guaranteed to be a bear.
