(Game Played April 02, 2008) –
LAKERS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF PATRIOT “HOSPITALITY”
Let’s just say Team A collected 10 hits, 2 walks, and had 2 hit batsmen. Team B collected 7 hits, 4 walks, and had 1 hit batsman. Team A had 3 runners reach base on errors. Team B had 7 runners reach base on errors. Team A happened to be the host Patriots of Terre Haute North Vigo High School. Team B was the visiting Shakamak Lakers. In a game that necessitated an extra inning to find a winner, it was Shakamak left standing the victor in a 10-7 baseball tilt that often displayed two teams who were refusing the opportunity to win it. Not to take anything away from always strong Shakamak, but a school record ten defensive errors were committed by the Patriots to allow the game to be extended anyway. Defensive play was ugly to say the least. When asked about the defensive play of his Patriots, Coach Shawn Turner of Terre Haute North said “…” The veteran of eleven seasons in the dugout as leader of the Northsiders was left speechless. It was apparent he had never seen such a debacle. This reporter was just as dumbfounded.
To be brief, we’ll leave the remainder of this article as a section of highlights. The defensive errors, mental mistakes, and baserunning blunders demonstrated throughout the game by the Patriots were far too many in number and came far too often.
Junior Billy Sisson led the Patriot offensive (3-for-5, double, 3 RBI, and 2 runs scored). Senior Joe Meggs was 2-for-3 with a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a run scored. Fellow senior Brandon Dorsett was 2-for-4 with 2 runs batted in and a run scored. Junior Michael Eberle went 1-for-3, was hit by a pitch twice, and scored three runs. Shakamak was led by shortstop Billy Newton (2-for-5, 2 runs scored).
The Patriots are now 1-2 on the year and play next in
