NORTH PICKS UP HUGE WIN OVER THE MAVERICKS

            Terre Haute North picked up a huge victory at McCutcheon High School in the morning in game two of the 8th Annual Joe Heath Classic. The final score showed the Patriots on top 9-1 over the host McCutcheon Mavericks. Junior J.T. Bailey (7 IP, 4 H, 5 K, 1 BB) picked up the complete game victory on the mound to even his record at 1-1 on the season.

            Highlights included a 3-for-3 performance by senior Joe Meggs (3-run HR, hbp, 4 runs scored). Junior Jared Eller was 2-for-4, with a double and 2 runs batted in. Senior Brandon Dorsett was also 2-for-4 with an rbi and a run scored. Senior Mark Merrill (1-for-4, rbi, sac fly) and juniors Billy Sisson (1-for-4, rbi, roe, run scored) and Nick Pilipovich (1-for-2, run scored, hbp) added doubles for the Patriots. Sophomore Dougie Collett (1-for-3, run scored) collected his first varsity hit in the game as well. Though the Patriots continued their hot hitting making use of 11 hits in the game, North was additionally aided by 4 Maverick errors. Long-time Patriot Assistant Coach Fay Spetter (catcher on the Patriots’ State Champion team in 1974 and famous for his Magnum P.I.-esque mustache) claimed “It’s a great day to be alive” prior to the pre-game preparation. At the conclusion of the game, Spetter added the victory was “huge…this is a great win for these kids and for the future success of this team.”

            Third Baseman Neil Hudson (2-for-3) of McCutcheon led the Mavericks offense with two doubles at the plate. Catcher Eric Tippy (1-for-3, run scored) added a double and relief pitcher Paul Gonzalez (1-for-2) picked up the only other hit for McCutcheon.

            Terre Haute North is now 2-3 on the year and faces Harrison in the finale of the Joe Heath Classic. The loss dropped Hall of Famer Jake Burton’s McCutcheon team record to 2-2.
