(Friday afternoon games)
Class 4A
C.H. Flowers 21, Oxon Hill 6
A week after edging Wise on the road by a single point, the Jaguars maintained their status as one of three unbeaten 4A teams, holding off Oxon Hill. A large reason to C.H. Flowers’ success has been its defense, which has allowed a county-best 26 points through five games. Against the Clippers, the Jaguars intercepted two passes while limiting the Clippers to 6-of-22 passing for 58 yards. With a road test at Northwestern and a home date against High Point both looking like wins; an Oct. 25 match up with Roosevelt could decide the 4A League title. Oxon Hill, on the other hand, has last three of its past four games to teams with a combined 15-0 record. Leo Gordon had 21 carries for 113 yards and the team’s only touchdown.
DuVal 49, Bladensburg 22
The Tigers got above .500 for the first time under coach Dameon Powell, earning a win over the Mustangs, who had been riding a rare three-game winning streak. In the past two weeks, DuVal’s offense has been a catalyst, averaging a county-best 44 points per game. With league lightweights Parkdale and High Point still on the schedule, the Tigers have an outside shot to sneak into the 4A playoffs for the second straight season. Meanwhile, the momentum stopped for Bladensburg, who are allowing a 45.5-point average in its losses and a four-point average in the victories.
Eleanor Roosevelt 24, Henry Wise 22
A week after accounting for six touchdowns, Roosevelt quarterback Mike Thomas tallied two scores, including the game’s deciding touchdown with just three seconds left in the fourth quarter. Penn State recruit Derrick Thomas, who recorded an interception, ran in the two-point conversion to give the Raiders a come-from-behind victory. Thomas ran for a season-high 80 yards on 14 carries and completed six passes for 90 yards, though it was his first game not to throw a touchdown. Roosevelt was down 14-0 at halftime, but intercepted Wise twice to cling to the home victory. Wise, however, lost its second gut-wrenching game in six days — both defeats are by a combined three points. Senior quarterback J.R. Burrell had 105 yards passing and two touchdowns, both to Anthony Wright. Wright added 119 yards and a rushing touchdown to account for all three Puma touchdowns.
Laurel 14, Parkdale 6
First-year head coach Brian Moore and Laurel earned its first victory of the season at home over winless Parkdale. After failing to score at Oxon Hill last week, the Spartans mustered two touchdowns to hold off the rebuilding Panthers. On the bright side, the Panthers did score their second touchdown of the season.
Northwestern-PG 12, Bowie 8
Six days after playing five overtimes at DuVal, Bowie managed another single-digit loss — its third this season. Amazingly, in the two Bowie wins, the Bulldogs outscored their opponents 66-0, while the three losses have been by a combined 10 points. Meanwhile, the Wildcats bounced back offensively after managing only a touchdown over the previous two weeks.
Suitland 56, High Point 0
With a monster home game with Roosevelt on the horizon, Suitland won its 24th consecutive league game, easily displacing struggling High Point. After inching past Oxon Hill in the home opener two weeks ago, Suitland has outscored its past two opponents 92-0. On the other side, High Point continued to struggle, getting blasted by 45-plus points for the fifth straight week. The Eagles are still looking for their first touchdown and have been outscored a county-worst 271 points.
Class 3A/2A/1A
Crossland 12, Central 7
Crossland had been outscored 68-0 in losses to Friendly and Douglass over the past two weeks, but rebounded with its second win of the season over improving Central. The Cavaliers were giving up 30.8 points per game, but tightened up to only allow one touchdown. Central, coming off a 30-0 win over Cardozo, failed to string together back-to-back wins for the first time since 2003.
Friendly 9, Douglass-PG 6 (OT)
Little-used senior kicker Mauriel Peacock booted a 21-yard field goal — the first in his career — in overtime to hand Douglass-PG its first loss of the season, while also giving the Patriots their fourth straight win. Friendly, which dropped its season opener in John Morgan’s coaching debut, was down 6-0 in the fourth quarter, but bounced back with Milton Gilchrist’s 20-yard touchdown reception from sophomore Sherrod Baltimore with 3:55 left. It was a frustrating day for the Eagles, who squandered two scoring chances inside Friendly’s 5-yard line and spent most of the game without seniors Christian Cook and Trey Massey, both of whom suffered first half injuries.
Gwynn Park 51, Forestville 20
Facing a talented Forestville team, Gwynn Park assumed its dominance over the 3A/2A/1A League in eclipsing 50 points for the second time this season. The Yellow Jackets continued to excel offensively, where they’ve put up a league-best 201 points. Forestville quarterback Caleb Gaines went 7-of-15 for 195 yards and three touchdowns and Antonio Belt had five receptions for 175 yards and three touchdowns, bring his season total to a county-best 11 scores. He also adding an interception in the losing effort.
Surrattsville 36, Fairmont Heights 0
After dropping three straight, Surrattsville won the battle of the Hornets, earning a shutout road victory over struggling Fairmont Heights. With Douglass and Gwynn Park awaiting in the next three weeks, the Hornets and first-year coach Robert Harris desperately needed a victory. Dating back to last season, Fairmont Heights has lost a county-worst 11 straight games. To make matters worse, its been outscored 160-6 through five games.
