Eleanor Roosevelt Raiders lacrosse team trounced visiting Sandy Spring Friends Wildebeests, 10-0, in the season-opener for both squads on Friday, March 13.
Sandy Spring Friends needed to go to plan 'B' for its goaltending needs as Sam Schneider took the position of goalie as the starter was unable to attend the game.
Still, the Raiders' combination of tenacious defense and lack of shots-on-goal for Sandy Spring Friends developed into the first-ever victory over Sandy Spring for Eleanor Roosevelt.
"We are very pleased with the effort and tenacity from this game," Roosevelt coach Dennis Duffy said. "Especially when we have 18 total players and nine are freshmen."
Although Schneider had plenty of point-blank saves, Roosevelt's Dan Webster and Riley Fink scored all 10 goals for the Raiders, as Webster led with six, respectively.
"I thought our clearing was exceptional today, combined with our pressure defense" Webster said. "We are so pumped to finally beat this team. They have definitely had our number lately."
Added senior defender Nathan Holmes: "We were knocking a lot of people down out there and getting the ground balls."
Sandy Spring was led with strong defensive efforts from Griffin Bleecker and Madison Stebbins.
