Ashburn (July 23, 2009) - Tommy Meier Jr., a 2008 graduate of Broad Run High School, recently signed a scholarship to play baseball at the University of Virginia at Wise. Meier transfers from the University of West Virginia where he redshirted.


Meier, a 6’2, 190 pound catcher started and caught nearly every inning for the 2007 and 2008 Dulles District Champions Spartans.  As a senior, Meier was part of the Spartan team that set a school record with 21 wins ending their year in the AA State playoffs. 

In 2008, Meier led the team with a .435 batting average and a .512 on base percentage.  Defensively, Meier threw out 9 of 20 would be base stealers.  For his efforts, he earned All-Dulles District honors as a catcher and was the team’s Defensive Player of the Year.

Meier, also a three year letterman on the Varsity football team, has two younger brothers, Johnny – a rising senior catcher at Broad Run, and Matthew – age 11.

UVA at Wise is a NAIA, Division II college that is a member of the Appalachian Athletic Conference.  The Cavs finished the 2009 season with a 23-24 record.

Meier was the starting catcher for the 2007 and 2008 Dulles District Champion Broad Run High School teams.  In 2008, Tommy led the team to a school record 21 win season. As a senior, he .435 in the clean-up spot for the Spartans with only one strikeout all season. Defensively, Meier threw out 45 percent of would be base stealers on his way to being named team defensive MVP and All-Dulles District acclaim.

Tommy Meier is expected to compete for quality innings behind the plate in his first year at UVa-Wise.
