Fernandina Beach, Fla. (Aug. 1, 2009) - The Greater Loudoun U14 Babe Ruth team advanced to the Southeast Regional on a series of dramatic victories and the cardiac kids were at it again on Friday, with Daniel Graves driving in two runs in the top of the seventh inning for an opening round 6-5 win over Nasau Bahamas.
Coach Doug Walker joked that the team has aged him 10 years in the last two weeks. Greater Loudoun, made up of rising freshmen and sophomores from Heritage, Loudoun Valley, Paul VI and Stone Bridge high schools, trailed on Friday, 2-0 in the fourth inning before jumping ahead, 4-2.
The island nine went back ahead, 5-4, heading into the final inning. With two outs and runners at second and third, Graves, son of manager Glenn Graves, line a single to scoring the tying and eventual game-winning runs.
Greater Loudoun took Saturday and Sunday off as weather postponed its 5 p.m. winner's bracket game against Union County, N.C. on Sunday evening. The game will be made up Monday.
