COVINGTON For eight minutes, Rockville kept its sectional
championship dreams alive.
But when the second quarter started, they slipped away quickly.
Turkey Run held Rockville to just one field goal in the second and
third quarters en route to a 53-37 win in the Sectional 56 final.
The Warriors advance play Lafayette Central Catholic at Tri-Central
High School regional in Sharpsville at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
The Warriors scored 32 in those two quarters to Rockvilles 13, which
consisted of a jump shot by Rox Hannah Flaurr and 11 free throws.
Turkey Run forced 11 Rockville turnovers in the first half and
committed three en route to a 31-16 halftime lead.
All year weve had big third quarters, Turkey Run coach Sam Karr
said. At halftime, we go in and regroup and stress defense again. If
we can do it for four (quarters), itd be scary.
The Warriors extended their lead by 10 points in the third quarter,
based largely on Freshman Adrianne Franciss eight points. She ended
the game with a team-high 15.
Francis said that defense was key. The Warriors stopped Rockville in
two main ways: stop the ball, put pressure on the ball. Just doing
what we do best, she said.
Freshman Chelsea Newnum added 14 for the Warriors, including 4 of 7
three-pointers.
I was really scared wed get off to a slow start, Turkey Run coach
Sam Karr said, referring to the effects of his young team. I keep
waiting for it to show. We really did execute and defend.
Rockville coach Jim Foster said he was pleased with the close first
quarter.
We struggled with pressure and turnovers and afforded them some easy
scoring opportunities, he said. Once we got behind, we knew it would
be tough to play the kind of ballgame we needed to win.
The kids are very disappointed right now. Regardless of the outcome,
our overall effort was good.
Kieran McMullen led Rockville offensively with 11 points and seven
rebounds. Chelsie Stout scored nine, and Hilary Vukovits came off the
bench to score seven.
For Warrior senior Sarah Patton, the win continued a season unlike any
other in her four-year Turkey Run basketball career. The
post-sectionals festivities had never included the numerous digital
pictures she was taking on Saturday.
With 10 seconds left, I thought, I couldnt believe we won it. It just
wasnt sinking in, she said.
Fans, family, students and players returned to the high school after
the game for an impromptu pep session that included player and coach
speeches, cheers and ordering sectional champions t-shirts.
